Fear: A stumbling Block to Life
What is fear? Dictionary.com defines fear as, "a distressing emotion aroused by impending danger, evil, pain, etc., whether the threat is real or imagined; the feeling or condition of being afraid. "Such a small word yet it has the potential to consume and overwhelm the very heart of a person.
Fear keeps you stuck and unable to move forward. In some cases, fear becomes a comfort and is the basis for decisions, behaviors and unfortunately evolves into the core of beliefs and lifelong traditions. Many have taken the so called easier route to avoid the anxiety associated with challenges or uncomfortable situations. These days it's easier to doge your problem rather than face it head on.
Walking in fear is dangerous because it connects you to the very thing that you fear. For instance, Job was a wealthy, God-fearing man who God allowed to be tested by the devil. Satan was able to attack Job in the areas of his life where fear was present from his possessions -family and finally his health. When you carry within you the spirit of fear, it breeds potentially negative situations. Additionally it affects your ability to make sound decisions and hinders your personal growth.
The most common fears many people deal with are of spiders, flying, public speaking and enclosed spaces. Some of these may sound silly to most yet they have become real stumbling blocks and hindrances to the ability of many people to function at their highest potential. If you are dealing with fear in areas of your life, here are practical ways to overcome your fears.
1. Admit to you are afraid and face your fears. This involves going out and participating in the very thing that you fear. But it also means being honest about the reasons for your fear and the reasons you choose to accept fear as a way of life.
2. Seek wisdom. If you fear snakes, learn more about them. Take time to familiarize yourself with the nature of the thing you fear.
3. Have faith. Like fear, faith is a connector. It will connect you to the promises of God. You may have a fear of flying however if you trust God to protect you as He promised in His Word, faith will conquer that fear.
Even though Job experienced physical agony and mental despair, he remained steadfast in his loyalty to God. As a Believer, you have the right to an abundant life and that includes being free from fear. Don't be victim to fear any longer, conquer your fears and start living your life to the fullest
