I think unless you have been forced to choose whether you should have an abortion it is hard to judge or understand what emotions and thoughts are involved in facing that choice.

I, for one, do not believe I could have had chosen abortion in my younger days (I am age 55 today) BUT two of my closest girlfriends did face this issue and chose to go through with an abortion. In those days not only was it considered more taboo to have a child out of wedlock BUT there were great safety issues for the Mom choosing to abort.

I can say in all honesty that each of them, especially in recent years have regretted that choice.

I think when you are young and in the moment ... you can only see the short term effect that having a child would place on you. But, as you age, and reflect on life...you realize so many things that seemed so insurmountable at the time would be much easier to deal with in hindsight.

Again, my aging friends wonder what their lives would have been like with the addition of that child. Enjoying the children they had in later years they now, in retrospect, see that each child is a blessing and brings gifts into the earth the day they were born. My friends wonder what the child would have contributed to society, as well to his / her brothers and sisters and extended family.

I do believe we need to approach and handle this situation with great compassion...and we need to offer counsel and wisdom to young women facing this issue. When I find myself being judgmental...I try to think "If not but by the grace of God, there go I.
