Before I start I must say I have finished the seventh and final book. Even without the seventh book there is proof that he is but a friend that Harry denies to see; just there is proof Harry is a good, bright, and humble student that which Snape refuses to see.
Though from the start sparks flared between Harry and Snape even within the first book, the Philosopher's Stone, Snape showed his allegiance. During Harry's first Quidditch Match Snape save him from being shook from his broom. In the third book, Prisoner of Azkaban, he attempted to protect Harry, Ron, and Hermione from Lupin when he was in his werewolf state. And even within the Order of the Phoenix, the 5th and longest book, Snape took Harry's warning and sent a message that he believed Sirius was at the Ministry.
Of course there is the argument of Snape's actions within the Half Blood Prince; but if you examine his character and the circumstances you might see the loop whole. Like most mysteries within the Harry Potter books JK Rowling has managed to hide the answers carefully, discretely.
I can't get into much detail as Snape, his motives and wants, is exposed in the last and final book wrapping up a long but detailed debate. With the final book in place there are still many answers to many unasked questions to be found. While Snape and whether he can be trusted or not is fully revealed, I my self will go back to re-read the book after reading the whole series again knowing some where there was another secret I missed between the lines.
