It gets it name from the swamp loving cypress trees draped in Spanish moss. It's tea colored water is teeming with little fish that attract birds, snapping turtles and of course, gators. Look for air plants and giant rainbow colored grasshoppers.
If you are dying to take an air boat ride, you'll have to do so out of the park. Everglades Alligator farm close to Homestead is on the east side, and Seedy Johnson's to the northwest near Everglades city both offer tours by air boat. Gator farm also has gators in pens of all sizes and gator wrestling.
Near Big Cypress you'll also find thrilling gator wrestling and aboriginal history of the area at the Miccosukee Indian Village.
The Everglades actually turned out to be a great trip after all. So, for once skip Disney and go wild. You won't be disappointed.
Now as a close, I'll remind all dog lovers that I bring my dog everywhere. USA National Park facilities allow dogs, but throughout the park system pets are only allowed on a 6 foot leash in the parking lots, and on paved roads.
This is fine for most circumstances since our family take turns dog sitting. Nonetheless, Florida does get hot, and I suggest never leaving you pup tied up, in a cage at the campsite, and never in your car.
Alligators also love to snatch up dogs, so don't approach water even on the paved roads.
Homestead Animal Hospital provided an all day kennel with a fee of 12 bucks while we took the boat trip and did a few other things. We picked our dog up at 6pm went back to camp and all were happy and intact.
