My son had a pet hamster and we were moving from Colorado to Pennsylvania. We planned the drive across country as a two-week vacation with various tourist stops and visits to relatives along the way. But how to safely take the hamster with us? We packed up all the fancy tubes and accessories of the hamster habitat, keeping just the base module to use for the trip. The module fit nicely on the back seat of the car and we put a towel over it to provide shade.
I was concerned about those times when we'd leave the car for a considerable amount of time, such as eating at a restaurant. It was summer and I didn't want to leave the hamster in the car with escalating temperatures. Our solution to the problem was use of a mini plastic animal cage which was only about seven inches long and five inches wide. I'd put the hamster in the cage and the cage in a tote bag that I'd bring along into the restaurants.
Every day when we'd stop at a motel for the night, the base module would come along with us into the room. Being active at night, the hamster would keep us awake with his running in the wheel, so the module always ended up in the motel bathroom with the door shut.
At journey's end, we all arrived safely to my mother's place where we'd be living for several weeks until our house was ready. My mom not being an animal lover, the one thing we hadn't done yet was inform her that she'd be having an extra house guest. Fortunately, the base module being small, a bathroom once again came to the rescue as the perfect out-of-the-way spot for him to reside.
