There is much debate on whether psychics should charge for their services. Many believe they are tapping into a natural God-given gift which was intended to be spiritual and that they should share glimpses into the future for those seeking spiritual advice. This theory leads people to equate the value of these services to those performed by perhaps a minister. If it is information coming from a higher power, it should be available to everyone regardless of their ability to pay.
The other side of the discussion suggests that all human skills and abilities come from the same source. Each of us has a set of God-given abilities, and psychic gifts are part of the overall package in what we can do. Our society is comfortable paying skilled workers such as plumbers, electricians, teachers, doctors and attorneys. We need to recognize that psychics provide a skilled service as well.
Psychic abilities, or the sixth sense, are available to everyone and can be developed at any point in a person's life. There are career paths, divination tools and required courses to prepare them to provide these services.
The practicing psychic has responsibilities beyond that of providing information to their clients. They are required to pay taxes and other business expenses as well. Their work becomes their livelihood. Their fees serve as income.
Many careers offer certification paths, which designate a recognized level of professionalism above their non-certified peers. The certification doesn't necessarily mean that one person is more qualified than another or provides better services. It does, however, suggest their commitment to their field and that the individual has reached specific accomplishments to provide a solid background for their business. A psychic certified in different aspects, such as tarot, earns more confidence from their clients.
People are on the fence about paying for spiritually-based services. I believe to some extent, our culture needs to "see it to believe it" and we don't have total confidence in the information we are given by someone else. It can be difficult to accept that they can see what we aren't able to. There are people offering psychic services who aren't legitimate. This dishonesty leaves clients with bad experiences and clouds the overall picture of what a psychic can do for you. It is important to ensure you are working with a professional when seeking spiritual advice.
My personal belief is that psychics, whether certified or not, should be paid. They provide a service and usually have training to support their skills. It is important for an exchange to occur and if the client has financial concerns, perhaps together they can determine if some other type of bartering is acceptable.
When a client finds a psychic they are comfortable working with, the topic of payment usually leaves the discussion because they find value in the service received.
