It's hard to do blanket recommendations as each individual's tastes determine what they like.

Obviously, no one is going to recommend they start at Uncanny X-Men #1, as that would just be cruel.

If they are already a reader, an author they like may have comic adaptations done of their work - such adaptations are becoming more and more prevalent.

However, some good starter comics for those completely virgin to the media would be:

The Sandman by Neil Gaiman - a cult classic, this 2000-page epic can be read in its standalone volumes, or as one work to see the depth of the world created. There are also several series and standalone works that feature various characters.

Transmetropolitan by Warren Ellis - a somewhat strange recommendation, but the combination of out-there humour and characters makes for an addictive mix.

Owly - if they want something cute and harmless.

Hellboy by Mike Mignola - a classic that has many, many jumping-on points for new readers.
