Being an 18 year old who has already had 4 different jobs i feel that i have a personal take on this subject. today kids should have only have a job if circumstance permits. i was given a car as soon as i turned 16. being the oldest in the family it was my personal responsibility to get my bother ans three sisters to school, and wherever they needed to be. with that said, i get my first job at the age of 16 and have been working ever since. my sister, only a year younger just got her first job three months ago. she doesn't have as much riding on her shoulders as i do so i can see why she didn't have to work for so long.
for a long time i was jealous that she didn't have to work, because who does wants to give up their Fridays and Saturday nights to work the midnight shift at the local grocery store?
with this short monologue, i can say that the age really depends upon the families need. i was needed to drive to and from school with my parents working a maniacs shift. it was on me to get everyone home and to school on time, and pay for everything i needed a job and therefore forced to work. all and all if your the oldest and the family needs you to drive and get a job, than you need you to work as soon as possible. however if you are able to hold on to your weekends and free time, than do so. work on your grades, work on scholarships, study.... because when you start working all you can do in the end is simply say goodbye.
