Poetry: Adoption

I use to play, in a children's home, with other little girls.
Some were short and some were tall and some had little curls.
We had stories, games and fun, and little chairs and tables.
And every night at bedtime, a lady told us fables.
None of us had mothers, to tuck us in for a nap.
None of us had dads, to hold us on his lap.
One day the office lady came and took my little hand.
She said,"You're going to have a home. Oh! it will be so grand."
What ever was she speaking of, I really didn't know.
For this here was my home, and I didn't want to go.
She sat me in the window seat and I was feeling sad.
I had a little wooden matchbox and it was all I had.
Inside my little treasure chest was a button oh so small.
I had nothing else in all the world and I didn't care at all.
Into the office some strangers came from somewhere very far.
They spoke to the office lady, then put me in their car.
I sat alone in the back seat, not knowing what shall be.
Feeling so alone, just the little box and me.
Well, finally we got somewhere and they took me into a house.
They tried to act so normal, but I was as quiet as a mouse.
As time went on I finally saw, that this was my new home.
I got acquainted pretty fast, never more to roam.
