Sexsomnia is brought on by either the body's response to hormones or the body's response to some subconscious psychological reasoning. This condition is completely innocent and natural in its early stages meaning nocturnal emission or more commonly known as wet dreams for men and nocturnal orgasms for women.
The idea of sleep sex was recorded as early as the middle ages when the terms incubus and succubus were coined in explaining demon spirits that have sex with sleeping men and women; more specifically they "latch onto the genital energy centre directly and cause a powerful forced type of orgasm very quickly." During the medieval era, witches confessed to having intercourse with the Devil this way. Such blasphemy often got them burned at the stake or murdered some other way. Modern sciences, however, explain psychological or hormonal reasoning.
Sexonmia occurs hormonally or psychologically, not because the suffering individual is ill mentally or physically; it is simply an occurrence in many individuals. Sherri Granato explains that sexsomnia "is presumed to be caused by abnormalities in the brain's arousal mechanisms or the biological processes that play a role in waking from sleep. It has been suggested that undefined emotional problems may be an underlying cause of sexsomnia episodes."
Sexsomnia has a range of severity, from the innocence of wet dreams or nocturnal orgasms in solitude to sleeping with a partner where the act ends in confusion of consensual or non-consensual sex acts or more alarmingly rape. This level of severity often weighs on the relationship if in a exclusive dating relationship or monogamous marriage. This condition has led couples to separation and divorces and assault charges. Understanding the condition helps the suffers in adjusting the problem. Often sleepwalkers develop this condition, so seeking out help in doctors and/or therapists is the best route.
