My funniest gardening story
In Pennsylvania you only have around four to five months to grow a vegetable garden. Usually you can start planting you vegetables around early May, when you are safe from the frost. Two years ago, my husband and I planted tomatoes, green bell peppers, hot banana peppers and some bush green beans. When we would come home from work we would go out to water and admire our little garden.
One day we around near the end of June, we notice a plant growing to the right of our garden. I asked my husband if he knew what kind of plant it was and he said "Oh, I think that is a watermelon, I found a few seeds in a baggy with the rest of our seed and planted them there few weeks ago." I responded, "Wow, a watermelon plant, I can't wait to see if we actually can grow a watermelon." People do grow watermelon here in Pennsylvania, but they usually produce small fruit from their plants.
By the end of July this amazing plant had grow over 8 feet long stretching across our yard with it's huge leaves and by this point it had three little baby watermelon plants. We did not want to disturb it so we just let it grow where it wanted. We were very careful to warn everyone visiting to be careful and not to step on our prize watermelon plant, so family and friends went along with our wishes and would either walk around it or jump over it. The little ones loved the idea of jumping over the watermelon plants. Everyone was amazed at the size of the plant and to think it was not done growing. We were so proud of our watermelon plant.
Another month had gone by and not only did the plant grow another four feet long, the three watermelons were a little larger than a basket ball. We were so proud! I was at work telling coworkers how large our watermelons had grown. One my coworkers responded that he tried several times to grow watermelons and his only grew a little larger that a softball. He just couldn't believe that my husband and I were having such luck growing them.
September was nearly over and the plants were now such a beautiful green and about the size of one and a half basketballs. I came home and decided that today was the BIG DAY that we all have been eagerly waiting for, time to enjoy the bounties from our wonderful watermelon plant. My husband was still at work when I told my son "I think it is time to pick one of the watermelons and bring it in to cut up for desert." I took my kitchen scissors and went over to the 12 foot long plant and selected the largest
