Web site reviews: MySpace.com

by Mr. B.

It is hard yet easy to write this review. It is actually a negative review of a site that was once favorited and set as homepages across the nation. MySpace took and continues to take the lead in online social networking. That fame, however, is very soon to die.

Myspace stood out as one of the first mass popular sites of its kind. While many others existed before it, Myspace was the first to stand out being referenced on TV and in the media when it spiked popularity. Being new to the concept of online socialization, it was much better than using e-mail to communicate with friends who had no incentive to read them. With this, you could view photographs of your friends, read up on news about their life, and basically get to know each other better.

Two serious problems existed in the earliest days that knocked off some attraction. The interactive features (early form of instant messaging, messages, comments) were all slow. And not only being slow themselves to work, but you weren't likely to get a response for up to 5 or 10 minutes. This led to the first revolution of social networking which was a combination of AIM with Myspace. Many users began to advertise their AIM profile in their Myspace and get AIM's after they registered for Myspace for the instant messaging.

The other problem from the early days that is unstoppable in any form of communication is the use of the interactive features for advertisement. Many users are turned off from bulletin usage early due to the amount of spam posts on the board.

The issue that is most effectively killing Myspace is the issue of speed. Pages freeze up often and the real use of the interactive features is going to hell in comparison to websites such as Facebook. Myspace communications take the user through about 3 pages of things to relay a message. This consists of finding the person's page which is nearly impossible if you haven't talked to the person in a while. The option for users to remain anonymous and the common use of a bizarre screen names AS WELL AS the use of pictures that give no identity makes it worse because then there is no particular way to search for them except visit every page that may be theirs.

Once you find the person you are looking for, you have to then wait for their page (tackily crammed with items from profile enhancement sites and loud music that frightens you) to load and then seek for the button that you need which with current customizations can be anywhere. With my own profile, many friends
