It really is a most interesting question, one we have been asking for a very, very long time. The ability to understand what another person is thinking at a given moment in time has been equally hailed and dismissed for thousands of years by modern man. I have looked at it holistically and taken all the known (to me) factors into consideration over the years and would have to say, today, Yes, and this is why.
As human beings we are incredibly sensitive to a wide variety of external sensory input, especially to that of our own species. We have been observing our own behaviour and hardwiring it into own DNA since before man ever evolved; it is a survival trait to understand the meaning in your own species behaviour. When we interact with other people we are actually involved in a highly sophisticated and mostly subconscious flow of information, which is conveyed in hundreds of different ways like posture, smell, clothes, gestures, intonation, and especially the ceaseless subtle movements of our most expressive features; our face and eyes. Whether we realise it or not we do read, analyse and act on this steady stream of information.
With the advent of Quantum Physics a whole host of ideas, theories, and empirical observations have entered the realm of science that previously dwelled only in philosophy or mythology. Many of the theories of Quantum Physics have gone on to become practical working implementations. There are two I can apply to my holistic understanding in this subject of mind reading.
Firstly, we live in a multi dimensional universe. What this means to me is what we seem to see and perceive in three dimensional reality is but the tip of the iceberg, vast amounts of information are being received by the body at a subconscious level all the time. Aldous Huxley described this theory in The Doors of Perception' as humans having a set of filters that enabled the mind to focus on specific three dimensional information only, a product of daily survival. We do need to focus on the world around us to avoid getting hit by that bus etc.
Secondly, and this is my favourite, physicists have tested and proved a quantum effect known as "Quantum Entanglement". This is when two electrons that could be on the opposite sides of the known universe, move in complete synchronicity with each other and even swap places. Incidentally, this effect is being presently utilised to make a teleportation device right out of Star Trek, with some initial success I might add, by Ashton Bradley at the Australian Research Council Center of Excellence for Quantum Atom Optics in Brisbane. Now what this means to me is that perhaps we could all be exchanging information at the quantum level using this very effect.
If you tie all these together then you have a fairly convincing case for the possibility of true mind reading, happening to all of us on a daily basis. One of the interesting results of this would be the fact that, you are never alone and do not actually have, a true privacy in your own mind.
Now please note, I am not referring to the popular TV show Mind Readers, on that I have seen enough evidence to convince me of pure fraud and the power of suggestion and observation on the part of the hosts, but given the evidence perhaps part of it may be real but not the greater part in my humble opinion.
