It's hard to think up any band that has achieved so much in such a quick amount of time. Within two years, AM has almost become saviors of their genre. In a country where artists are lucky to sell 100,000 copies in their debut week, AM did almost three times that. And despite the old axiom that just because something sells a lot doesn't make it good, the Alex Turner-fronted band is a solid group that may not live up to the massive hype, but certainly have some worth to the industry.
Turner comes from an old-school level of thinking in that he goes for interesting stories with songs, either biting pieces like their first CD's rousing finale "A Certain Romance" or mind-numbingly catchy tracks like "I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor". And yet they have a punk sheen to their music. Their second album, Favorite Worst Nightmare, shows that the band is hardly cowering to the temptation of a more commercial sound. Even the first single of FWN, "Brianstorm", has a rough edge that would frazzle pop music crowds.
And while that rough edge will probably kill their chances of being impacting in the US, it most certainly holds true to their emphasis on music first. Only time will tell if these guys really are the rock legends of our time, but one thing I know for sure right now is that they've got some fantastic music spread over their albums and EPs so far.
