The answer lies in the ideals of the individual. I can only speak for myself. Sex is an important part of a relationship, but not the only part, of course. Ultimately, it becomes a vehicle for good communication, trust, and emotion.
Sex is a form of power, and just like money, if used unwisely, the results can be disastrous. Unmarried Catholics, in preparing for their marriage ceremony, abstain for six months. This seems like a reasonable solution to a common situation...the couple, having fallen in love, may have already engaged in sexual relations.
I do applaud the "test-drive" method. I'm not very good at choosing appropriate partners
so I have zero advice to give. I do find the notion that sex is a right, not a privilege, offensive. The act remains the prerogative of the female in my book, we are the honey, not the bees!
In addition, while I am on my soap-box, I find it unfortunate that too often, once a woman sleeps with a man, he seems to consider her a personal servant, not only for free sexual services, but free laundry and vacuuming services as well. Perhaps it's a class issue, but I won't do it. I prefer to sleep with my integrity.
