5 Things You Need to Know About Sexual Dysfunctions

For most people sex is an important part of their life. When it comes to quality of life issues, sex ranks right up there near the top of the list. When sex goes smoothly, it can be an amazing, satisfying experience. Sadly, when there are problems in the bedroom, it can turn something so wonderful into something extremely frustrating and at times embarrassing.

Most people, at some point in their lives will experience some type of sexual dysfunction. It can be primary, meaning the person has been experiencing the dysfunction from the onset of sexual activity or it can be secondary, which means they were able to function successfully in the past but are now having a problem.

There are many aspects to sexual dysfunction and trying to understand what is happening to you while it is happening to you can be confusing and add to an already stressful situation. But do not despair! By learning a few simple facts about sexual dysfunction, you can have a solid place to start in dealing with any problem that may arise-or not arise as the case may be! Below are 5 simple facts to get you started in the way to understanding sexual dysfunction and on the path to a satisfying sexual life.

1. Sexual dysfunctions occur at some phase of the sexual response cycle. Where in the response cycle determines what kind of dysfunction it is. They occur in either the desire phase (feeling sexual, wanting to engage in sexual activity, libido), arousal phase (ability to get and maintain an erection, vaginal lubrication etc.) or orgasm phase (no explanation necessary). It is possible to have more than one dysfunction at the same time.
2. Sexual dysfunctions can be caused by a medical problem. High blood pressure, diabetes, vascular damage, disease or disability all contribute to sexual functioning. Often, the dysfunction is a red flag for a larger medical problem. A thorough physical exam is the first place to start to get to the bottom of the problem.
3. Sexual dysfunctions can be caused by an emotional or psychological problem. Stress, relationship problems, depression are some of the factors that can contribute to sexual dysfunction. Further, even if the problem is medical in nature, there are often emotional or psychological ramifications that can contribute to the problem continuing. Performance anxiety is one such example of this.
4. Medication can have sexual side effects. Loss of desire, low libido, vaginal dryness and problems with orgasm are possible side effects. However, do not stop your medication without discussing it with your Doctor first. This can be harmful and there is a possibility he or she may be able to prescribe a different medication.
5. Sexual dysfunctions are treatable and curable! If you suffer from a sexual dysfunction, do not think for a minute that your sex life is over. Far from it. It may take a little time and work but with the right treatment, you can regain sexual function. You may need to see a sex/relationship therapist for help with this but it is well worth it. They can work in conjunction with your doctor to determine the type of treatment that is right for you.

So there you have them. 5 simple facts to get you started in understanding sexual dysfunction. I would urge anyone who is experiencing any type of sexual function problem to see your doctor for an exam and if necessary find a good therapist. If you are experiencing depression I strongly suggest you see a mental health professional for help in overcoming it. Remember that healthy sexuality is a life long process of learning and growing and while we all experience a few bumps in the road there is no reason to think you cannot get back to smooth sailing!
