Sleepwalking occurs when deep sleep, during the 3rd and 4th stages of sleep, are interrupted and the ordinary body movements of sleep become synchronized and enables a person to perform normal activities. There are several causes, such as stroke, stress, sleep disorders, gastrointestinal problems, and sleep deprivation. The key in finding an appropriate treatment is uncovering the cause and then treating the cause.
Medications, such as prosom, klonopin, and trazodone or desyrel, may improve the issue. For many, especially in children since they are more prone to sleepwalking, the problem goes away on it's own. Prevention is a good method and includes relieving stress, acquiring more sleep, utilizing relaxation techniques and mental imagery. It may be a positive step to reduce stimuli near bedtime, sleep in a safe area, and lock windows and doors.
