The key ingredients for grasping a second chance in life

Have you ever wanted to "turn over a new page", "start again" or grasp a "second chance in life"? How easy is it? And what are the key ingredients to success? Let me pass on to you my own thoughts, gleaned from personal experience and advice from great thinkers from all walks of life.

The first steps are easy. Begin by making the decision to change your life, and follow it with a serious resolve to take action. Don't dwell on the past, but begin to look forward to a brighter, happier, and more rewarding future. Planning is important! Decide how you want your life to look, and plan, plan, plan. Try to think of everything you want - social, financial, relationships, health, image, career, home, diet - the list is endless. The more you plan, the clearer your picture of your new life will become. Be imaginative and don't restrict yourself. This is your blueprint for the future.

Make an action plan for yourself. Think of small changes that you can make easily. These little changes form larger building bricks for your new life and play an important part in helping you see the progress you are making. Although you may decide to make a big change - move house, take a new job, end a bad relationship - breaking it down into smaller, manageable steps will give you confidence to tackle it. Big changes are often made in small steps.

When you are ready, take action. Amaze yourself! You will be surprised at how easily some of the small changes you have planned can be achieved, and how good you feel, knowing you are starting over. As you achieve these small changes, your confidence will grow, and you will see your new life beginning to materialize. And you will see that there's nothing you can't achieve if you have the vision and motivation to bring it about.

Having a setback? This is all part of the process, so don't despair and don't give up. See it as a hurdle that you need to overcome. Like an athlete, tackling a new challenge, you simply need to build yourself up. Look at the situation through every angle to work out how to deal with it. Is it a question of confidence? Then tackle something simpler until you feel able to overcome it. Need extra help? Think of people or places that can give you the resources that you need to get you through it. Sometimes it's the fear of change itself that causes a problem. Go back to your plan, and think of what you want to achieve. Then push through your own fears and limitations, follow your dream for your life, and go for it!

You may find friends that will encourage you. But be prepared - many people dislike change, and would prefer things to stay as they are. Some of the people that are closest to you may not be as supportive as you would hope. Don't worry - when you have achieved your goal and built a brighter, better life for yourself, they will be among the first ones there to congratulate you and share it with you.

You can change your life. Take it from me - my life has been turned around more than once, and I have no special skills other than a great plan and the determination to make my life the best that it can be. And so should yours be! So take that second chance on life, and don't look back!
