Efficiency of fuel is measured on the basis of octane count. The octane number of the premium one is higher and hence people say that it better.
There are primarily two reasons for advocating the use of premium grade fuel.
The first one says that you get better mileage and the second one makes you believe that it is better for your car. It is supposed to improve the efficiency of the engine and improve the general performance of the car. Some say it has better anti-knock features and also when the engine goes off there is generally less noise. So overall it is supposed to be good for the health of your car.
The downside is that cost of this grade of gasoline is higher than the normal one. But companies would want us to believe that higher mileage and better car performance justifies the higher cost.
However, based on experience it has been seen that the mileage and cost differential when you use premium grade works out to be the same as when you use regular grade. So with the extra money that you pay for this you get higher mileage. But if you fill normal grade gas with the same amount of money that you pay to buy premium grade then you get the same mileage.
Another aspect to keep in mind is that performance of a car to a large extent depends on regular servicing during which filters are cleaned and several other checks are done. Whichever fuel you may use you still end up servicing your car after the same mileage. There is no difference on this.
Oil companies want us to believe that premium gas is better for your car because that is where they make more money. The amount of money they make on this product is much more than they do on the regular grade. So keep away from the rhetoric. Regular grade gasoline is just as good as premium gas.
