Family life: Looking back at times gone by

of Congress to have the president pardon Ramos and Compean but he has yet to do so. However, he has found the time to pardon several drug dealers.

In a similar case a young Edwards County, Texas, deputy sheriff named Gilmer Hernandez was also thrown in jail for defending himself from people who were in the country illegally. Hernandez had stopped them for a traffic violation in Rocksprings when they tried to run him over. He fired at the vehicle's tires and some bullet fragments flew off the pavement and slightly wounded several of the occupants in the car.

Once again cowering to the demands of the Mexican government a U.S. Attorney named Johnny Sutton, the same one involved in the Ramos-Compean case, prosecuted Hernandez. The officer received a year in jail and because he is now considered a felon, chances are he will never work in law enforcement again. He had dreamed of being a lawman since childhood.

Hernandez is well thought of by the people in Edwards County, including the current sheriff. Most folks living in Rocksprings, the county seat, say that Gilmer Hernandez would probably have been the next sheriff. They were outraged when the young man was sent to jail.

And what happened to the so=called illegal immigrants that he wounded? Well, they sued Edwards County and both settled out of court for a cool $100,000 apiece. No doubt they are now living the good life in Mexico while Gilmer Hernandez has seen his future go down the drain for simply doing his job.

It's incredible when you think about it, three honorable U.S. lawmen serving time in jail because of Mexico's interference. And our government continues to allow it to happen.
