Thyme is a lovely herb, both in terms of its culinary abilities and its very pretty flowers, making it both functional and decorative.
It is a plant that likes plenty of room, which can cause problems depending on the size of your garden.
Where I live, the garden is not that big and the back end of it has been turned over to growing vegetables. Part of the rest is lawn with flower beds and finally a patio area with garden furniture is planned, so you can see that space is not huge.
As a result I have chosen to grow thyme and 8 other herbs in planters which have been hung on the wall of the shed. This has several advantages; 1: the wretched slugs and snails can't get to them; 2: this method controls their growth so they can't take over anywhere you want for other things and 3: they get the best of the weather being higher up off the ground.
It works well for me and will probably work well for you too. I have two varieties of herb in each planter as there are only two of us to use them on; if you require larger amounts, just grow one per planter. They are very tolerant of weather and treatment, the only thing they really need a regular supply of is water. I grow mine in compost, so even your soil type becomes irrelevant.
There is nothing like being able to go out and pick your own fresh herbs when you want them, so if you are space limited, give this a try. It really does work well. Good luck.
