"Discover, experience, explore Kenya." This seems to be the new slogan that the Kenya tourism board is using to encourage tourists to frequent the East African Nation. Despite the repeated travel advisories issued by the American government warning their citizens against visiting the country, thousands of loyal tourists still flock here to savor the Kenyan experience. More specifically, quite a number come to view what in some circles is called the eighth wonder of the world: the annual wildebeest migration. It is an awesome sight to see these imposing animals brave the crocodile infested waters of the Tana River in their thousands to seek greener pastures.

For those who have been thinking of paying a visit to the country, stop thinking and get moving! Here are some helpful hints to consider as you plan for your trip.

Where to stay? A hotel is the most obvious choice and there are numerous top quality international hotels in and around Nairobi, the Kenyan capital city. But how better to experience Kenya then to stay with a Kenyan family in their own home. African Homestay services, run by Peter Ongera, links tourists with Kenyan families willing to host them. For a very reasonable price you can get your own room complete with breakfast and dinner depending on the arrangement. According to Mr. Ongera, "It provides the international visitor the opportunity to live and be exposed to African culture on a daily basis, rather than viewing it as an ordinary tourist. Through this experience, African hosts find it possible to know their guest's national identity first hand. Together they create an international community in African context" It also provides the tourist a safe place to stow those backpacks which make you stand out like a sore thumb on Nairobi streets!

Where to eat? Most hotels and tour organizers will provide meals when you are out on safari but when in Nairobi, how about a change from the regular hotel food? Antonio's grill is a cozy restaurant located on Kaunda Street, a stones throw from the Intercontinental Hotel and within easy walking distance of the Stanley. For those on a holiday budget it is truly a bargain with prices just under one pound sterling. As the name suggests, Antonio's has a Mexican flavor to its cuisine. They offer a unique blend of South American and Kenyan cuisines. Their Mexican breakfast features the Kenyan chapatti complete with Spanish omlette and beans, not forgetting a pot of coffee. The best part is that you can mix and match as you please to come up with your own exclusive blend.

Where to shop? Kenya is often associated with the world famous Maasai people. Their trademark red and blue clothing, complemented with colorful traditional jewelry and ochre make up make them stand out. Their one of a kind cultural identity has made them stand out. The Maasai market in Nairobi is therefore the place to go. One can be able to access a wide variety of authentic artifacts, not only from the Maasai but from almost all of the forty two Kenyan ethnic groups. There is everything from jewelry to salad bowls, Kikoy (shawls) to paintings. It is truly a one stop shop to round off your Kenyan experience. Natural materials are used to produce the various soapstone carvings and tree bark paintings. The market is open four days a week in different locations within the city but the Tuesday market is wholesale. Some of the stall owners have other outlets within the city and can make items to order for those who have a particular preference.
