Dog breed facts: Chihuahua

in Chihuahuas is hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). This can usually be controlled with a tiny bit of honey to bring the sugar back up. Your vet will have suggestions on how to control your pet's blood sugar if that tends to be a problem. Chihuahuas also have a soft spot on their heads, a lot like the soft spot found on an infant's head. Although this part of the skull does tend to fill in, as they get older, the first 6 months should be watched closely. Keep in mind that some smaller Chihuahuas may keep this soft spot for life. Chihuahuas are also prone to genetic anomalies, such as epilepsy.

If you want a loving, loyal, affectionate pet, the Chihuahua is it! However, if you have smaller children that can be rough and hasn't yet learned to be gentle with the family pets it is not a good idea to get a Chihuahua. They do tend to get agitated after a while and can snap. They will normally warn first but you can never be too careful. Another thing to watch out for with Chihuahuas is the fact that they are very nervous and shy around other breeds of dogs unless raised around a particular dog. They do normally accept and socialize with their own breed. When out and about with your Chihuahua be sure to keep him on a lease close by. They sometimes forget how small they are and will attack with full force a much larger dog.

*Note: Because Chihuahuas are so fragile it is best to use a harness instead of a regular collar. This will help prevent any throat and neck damage when pulling to get after the larger dogs.

A few sites to check out before getting a Chihuahua:

http://www.chihuahua -rescue.com (offers information on adopting Chihuahuas, breed information, etc)
http://www.petfinder.com (find pets in need of a home in your area)
http://www.breedersclub.n et (find dogs of puppies for sale, also find information on dog breeds or dog breeders)

Also there are many books available in print that you can find to help comfortably raise your new Chihuahua. A couple of examples are; "Chihuahua handbook" by Ph. D. D. Caroline Coile, and "Guide to owning a Chihuahua" by Roberta Sisco which offers information on puppy care, grooming, training, health, etc.
