Dog breed facts: Chihuahua

One of the smallest dogs in the world is known to be the Chihuahua. One of the most common questions asked about the Chihuahua is how to pronounce the name. The answer to this question is Ch-wha-wha". Keep in mind before deciding to house a Chihuahua they demand a lot of love and attention. It would not be fair to bring this type of pet into a home where it would not get the attention necessary.

There has been a debate whether the Chihuahua was originated in China or Mexico. This is something that is hard to prove after so many years. However, Mexico does have many facts pointing to a small dog that resembles the modern day Chihuahua. This includes carvings done by the Toltecs that date back to the 9th century of a small dog that greatly resembles the Chihuahua we know today. This dog was known as the "Techichi". Although sad to think about but these dogs were known to be used for religious and other activities that did not include being the companion of a loving family.
The Chihuahua made its first appearance in the civilized world in the mid 1800s. Some were found in Mexico and named after the state in which they were found Chihuahua.

As I stated before Chihuahuas are known to be one of the smallest dogs in the world, some may actually say that they are the smallest in the world. Their being so small can also cause them to chill easily. You will notice the Chihuahua loves to cuddle against you, under blankets, pillows or anything close by to keep them warm. Considered to be a toy breed, normally weighing in around 2 9 lbs. Measuring height of 6 9 inches, although some can grow to be as tall as 15 inches and slightly larger than 9 lbs. They are known to have wide set eyes, large erect ears (although they can be floppy in most Chihuahua puppies), long or short and smooth coats, and in a variety of colors which include: sable, brindle, merle, and "spotted" being solid colors with spots.

Many may wonder about the lifespan of a pet before purchasing or adopting. Smaller dogs like the Chihuahua are known to live longer than larger dogs. This is because their small structure keeps the bones and heart from working so hard, preventing or holding off many health problems. Chihuahuas typically live from 8 15 years, although some have been known to live as long as 18 years or more. Being small doesn't prevent any problems from occurring however. Chihuahuas can be very fragile and can have issues in their joints, such as knee dislocation. Another common health problem
