When you think about pro black shows that were on television in the '90s, there are only two that really stand out. One being the Cosby Show which was great in it's own right, but perhaps the show that really reached out to African American fans in America was The Fresh Prince. In a time where racism was still somewhat rampant in America (remember Rodney King anyone?) this show portrayed a black family doing quite well for themselves living in an extremely nice section of Beverly Hills, keeping many friends, and being a strong family unit. Will Smith is a comic genius with smart, sometimes scathing comedy that keeps the audience laughing throughout the show. Don't get me wrong, there are plenty of serious moments and clear messages that this show sent to viewers that made it worthwhile, but the reason people still watch is for the comedy. While there were some parts of the series that made some feel it was somewhat racist towards whites, (only one episode I can think of) in the end the characters became accepting towards everyone. Done in a smart and witty manner, this show defined a generation and will never ever be forgotten in American pop culture.
