No. I think it is double the work. Because everything that the planner does she has to confirm with you & get your opinion anyway, so you are really not losing any stress. Just take initiative and do some research to find what you want.
I am in the wedding business, and it is amazing what there is for resources out there. Just look on the web! From vows to favors, you can find all you need. If you need a second opinion ask a friend or family member.
Planning- whether you have a planner or not, is a lot of work. But you need to make it fun and be organized. You need lists and check them off as you go. A wedding planner is often hired because it is believed they can get you "deals". In my experience this is just not the case.
But really, When it comes to wedding and "deals" don't expect much. Vendors do this on a weekly basis, and do not have a sliding fee rate. They have set prices and are not going to budge very much if at all.
There are plenty of brides getting hitched every year, that vendors do not have concerns about needing to negotiate prices. Another will come along if you don't like the prices.
Just take the time at night to go online and find what you want. Its really not that bad. I had a wedding of over 200 guests and I worked full time, ran my own business, did it all on my own and had a beautiful, fabulous wedding.
Another option is to choose a site that has packages. This eliminates having to search and price out different vendors. Its all in the package. And they don't settle for just anyone, their reputation and livelihood is on the line. Packages are a fine way to go.
