Oral health specialists have come to somewhat of a consensus on the causes of bruxism (although not all totally agree). It seems to be daily stresses-aggravated by people with nervous tension can cause the excessive and very damaging grinding of the teeth, charateristic of the disorder. It can also affect people who are overly rushed, aggressive and competitive. Statistically, the highest degree of bruxism sufferers are business people, students, gamblers, alcoholics, drug addicts, etc. A terrible grinding that can expose the dentin by wearing through the enamel, or even in some extreme cases damage the jaw. It would depend on the emotional state of the bruxism sufferer.
Some people even grind their teeth in their sleep, something I am guilty of myself. Daily stresses may continue into nighttime through dreams or other means, continuing to cause the grinding of teeth. Remember the mind and body are symbiotically linked. This is why a lot of night time sufferers wear a relatively cheap dental appliance to prevent the excessive wearing of their teeth.
