A great crocheted Mother's Day gift for your Mother would be an afghan throw for her to use when watching television or reading so that she doesn't get chilled. Older people do tend to get chilled easily. You can sew her initials or Mom on the afghan. Also, a beret or a floppy hat with a crocheted rose flower on it makes it unique, and ready-made items like that cost a pretty penny in boutiques.

You could also make a bedspread made of granny squares, using leftover yarn which is very versatile and travels well. There are other keepsakes as well, such as ornaments, doilies and sweetheart sachets, and crochet on hangers which are inexpensive to make and are easy to take with you as you travel. The sachets can be scented with Mother's favorite potpourri for lasting fragrance. If you include Velcro at one end, she can refill it with fresh potpourri when the fragrance fades or you can give her a bottle of scent, such as vanilla, which she can add when needed.

There are many beginner's books available in some five-and-dime stores and craft stores. Sometimes they are even on sale. If you buy one that includes several designs for things you'd like to make, you'll get good use out of the book.

I think an afghan is good to start with because it isn't as difficult as something that has to fit exactly like a book jacket, a hat, and slippers. Slippers are also a nice gift, and you can add something to personalize them too, like a rose crocheted flower or bow with pompoms. If you are more experienced, you could make a nice, dainty shawl or a poncho with either a bow to tie with pompoms on the end or initials.

Anything you make for your Mother will be made with love, and I'm sure most Mothers would really appreciate the time and effort you put into it. When I lived by myself for the first time after my divorce, I made afghans in different colors for all the female members of the family.
