There are many ways you can promote an on-line business, but how do you get your business to stand out in a crowded field of thousands of businesses that are selling on-line? That is not an easy question to answer, but I will use my experience as an on-line marketer to do so.
1) Offer a product that people want or need, or content that people want to read about.
Plain and simple... If you offer an outstanding product people will come to you whether you have a virtual storefront on-line or a brick and mortar store. If you offer appealing, interesting ideas or content, people will want to read about it on-line and make repeat visits.
2) Email advertising.
Insert a sign-up form prominently on your website, and collect a database of email addresses through that avenue. Also, gather email addresses through word of mouth, trade shows, conventions etc. Do not SPAM though. This can have a negative effect on your business.
3)Offer the user a positive experience
If a user enjoys your site, finds it informative and easy to navigate through, add products to the shopping cart, and checkout, then they will be more likely to make a return visit and purchase and mention the site to friends and relatives. A negative experience will of course have the opposite effect.
4) Pay per click advertising.
Google ad words is a great way to gain a lot of visitors fast, but BEWARE, the clicks can add up quick, and be extremely costly. Make sure you effectively measure your ROI (Return on Investment) with pay per click ads.

6) Search Engines
perhaps the best way of all to promote your business is with a clean, fast loading site with TONS of key words and content. The more content, the more key words you will have of course :-)
Also stuff your key words within the main HTML tags such as (the most important to search engines), also H2, H3, H4, H5, H6 tags. Separate the content from the presentation with effective use of cascading style sheets (CSS), and make sure you update your content often. No one wants to go to a site that only gets updated once or twice a year!
7) Blogging
This has become very popular, and it's very easy to set up a blog through Wordpress or another blogging template available on-line for free as open source. Effectively communicate your product,
