Restaurants should be required to list nutritional information on their menus. Why not? Any food or drink company now, thanks to the FDA, is required to include it on the package, right? How goofy is it that Aquafina has to put a label on the side of a bottle of water? Why should restauranteurs be exempt?
I've worked in enough restaurants to know that the majority of the food comes pre-packaged, or pre-cut. It's not like the chef is actually out in the back slaughtering the cow for my tasty filet mignon. It comes to them in a box, already cut into the proper proportions.
I've read some of the articles counterpointing this topic and I don't contest that different chefs have incongruent methods to preparing the same dish, but it's all relative to the actual food item being prepared and how large the portion. All that would need to be added to the nutritional information label on a restaurant menu would be an asterisk (*) that says the actual numbers may vary slightly.
I personally don't count calories or fat content, but I occasionally glance at the labels. It would be nice to see on a menu the difference between the fried grouper sandwich and the grilled salmon filet.
