I believe this is a no brainer; how is it possible that we even ask this question, this is our health we are speaking about? GM foods are the product of genetically engineered plants; the process of transferring or isolating plant genes to increase resistance to pesticides, herbicides and to improve nutritional content. My thing is if we stopped tearing down fields to build 'gated communities' for the sake of seclusion (which seems to me a huge contributor to the pests and herbicides because we then have to grow crops in areas previously not complimentary to crop growing), and if we take the time out to prepare meals that involve all food groups to ensure healthy eating instead of stopping at the countless fast- food joints we know shouldn't even exist, the problems stemming from growing GM foods wouldn't be an issue. It's bad enough that this country sits and sleeps on the fact that we are under the care of a president that cheated his way into leadership, now we are supposed to allow the FDA to poison us with cloned foods (basically). I don't know about you but to me eating foods containing pesticide, weed- killer and anti-freeze genes just doesn't sound very appetizing to me.
This is not the Matrix, it's the real world and the line has to be drawn somewhere, I'd like it to be at this point where we still have input on what we consume for the health of our (grim) future or is it already too late? Let's be civilized here, we are playing with fire by even marketing this stuff simply because we are not 100% sure it's harmless. It seems that America is quick to go ahead with new trends but never really concerns itself with the repercussions of failure to deliver, then when the new wonder does fail and some tragedy emerges from it, only then do we want to campaign and create some type of law to cease the outcome which in reality is just a band-aid to hush the complainers yet never reverses the damages done.
Though this debate is geared towards the FDA, I feel it is important to mention the EPA and USDA who conduct evaluations for environmental, and crop growing safety, leaving the FDA to carry out the impossible tasks of conducting health and safety inspections for consumption that they can't possibly execute due to lack of funds, resources and the most obvious of all, time. To make a long debate short, though it is unfortunate that the ball is left in their court, the FDA MUST REQUIRE FOOD MANUFACTURES TO REVEAL IF FOODS ARE GENETICALLY MODIFIED, if not we might as well just open our doors and windows at the same times each day to hold out our plates and let them feed us anything they want...or is this already the case (metaphorically speaking)?
