Advancements were made when robots entered the picture. Although differences and possibly resembling their creators and the public they work for, and despite hype and extravagant claims, they basically work the same. Excite, named from Architext, was one of the first and an exciting choice indeed. It was developed by six collaborating Stanford Students. Then along came Infotext who later bought Excite.

The room had to be made for the Yahooligans. Yahoo., started in 1994, by David Filo and Jerry Yang. It is still in there today pitching its giant come hither tent alongside Microsoft and Google, who likewise are doing the same thing, making bids for our time and our money.

In 1998, Rich Skrenta started the free search engine And LookSmart, entered the scene in 1995 with rounded O's looking not only smart but stylish, and in the meantime created much interest. LookSmart somehow seemed to give dignity to the searching, It seemed to me that LookSmart was raising its eyebrows at Yahoo. I say that because the name seems to suggest rowdy.

Then LookSmart's O's masquerading as zero's began to droop in 2002 when their pay-per-click scheme lacked the momentum it needed to stay viable. Microsoft, who had been using this high-class search engine dropped them and this ended their comeuppance, once and for all.
