Sudan's Darfur region in the headlines for the atrocities happening there. The government supported militia-the Janjaweed-launched attacks against the non-Arab residents of the region about six years back and the bloodshed still continues. Women and children are the most affected. Children suffer from starvation and malnutrition as the militia has severely restricted their access to food and aid supplies. Women are systematically targeted and rape is the weapon of choice.
Darfur, where thousands have already lost their life and thousands more are living under terrible conditions. Government of Sudan is complicit in this genocide of its own people, it has consistently refused to allow international peace keeping force to intervene. The "janjaweed", get arms and supplies from the government and President Bashir is shameless enough to go around in the region claiming that he has done nothing wrong.
About two months back a Church in my city invited a Darfur refugee to speak on the situation in the region. He told us about how the militants targeted women and children, raping and killing them in front of their family. This to instill fear among the people so that they stay quiet. Most men have fled the villages, leaving women in charge.
How can the world community sit quite and watch this genocide go on? We have the responsibility to stop this mass murder. I agree the Iraq too needs help to rebuild and there is violence going on there, but humanitarian crises in Darfur is more severe.
Darfur needs help now, it is a bigger and noble cause than the Iraq war. After all Iraq war was started by few selfish people in Washington who attacked a sovereign country under false pretenses and now are escalating the war to secure the country's oil resources. In Darfur thousands have already perished and thousands continue to suffer. Iraq war is a political on but in Darfur whole notion of humanity and humane behavior is at stake.Urgent intervention is needed in Darfur to protect the civilians there and to preserve man's faith in humanity. If we let this slide then it is possible that no one will ever believe in being one's neighbor's keeper.
Military intervention is not the way to go in most cases but in Darfur it is precisely what should be done. That is because President Bashir has bought arms from countries like China and is not going to let go easily. He will use his last gun to kill a Darfuri. A shameless and inhumane man like him does not understand the civility of negotiations. He has to be subdued by strong military action.
