I find it difficult to find the point in this set of articles. I mean, what are we trying to resolve here? Are we trying to decide upon the greatest Heavy Metal bands or songs of all time? Or are we trying to defend or fight against Metal? With a title like "Heavy Metal" this isn't very clear.
So, "What are you going to write about?" I hear you cry (silently and from behind your computer screens). Well, I'm going to try and cover a little of everything and reply to some of the comments that other people have left.
One of the comments that stood out the most for me was the one which incorporated the line "Old is Gold". This particular person (the name of which I have forgotten) suggested that there is no talent in modern metal. This is a point which I strongly disagree on. Over the past couple of decades Metal has split into numerous sub-genres and sub-sub-genres - each with it's own crop of extremely talented bands and each with it's share of less-than-sensational ones. This can be said with many genres. The problem is that many of the bands in these sub-genres are not very well known to those outside of that particular scene and probably never will be. This is often due to that fact that most of these bands - through lyrical themes or music - cannot be featured on mainstream television or radio. So, just because you may not be aware of any talent in this genre, it doesn't mean it's not there. You just have to look a little deeper to find it.
Anyway, moving on... I think that the notion that Grunge 'killed' Metal is completely false. Metal continued while Grunge was in the lime-light - it just wasn't in the mainstream as much. Also, there's the fact that Metal is still going strong even today.
To end this article, I'd like to recommend some bands to any readers who may be interested. If you're into metal - or even if you're not and you just want to see/hear what all the fuss is about - feel free to check out the following bands. I'm just going to provide the band's names and sub-genres, rather than links. I'm sure that if you put the names in a search engine that locating a website will be easy!
Devilish Impressions - Black/Death Metal (also described as "Avantgarde Black Metal")
Finntroll - Folk Metal
Kromlek - Folk Metal
Black Lotus - Folk Black Metal
Omnium Gatherum - Melodeath with Progressive Elements
Nicodemus - Goth/Progressive Metal
Vesperian Sorrow - Symphonic Dark Metal
I have focused mainly on the 'darker' side here, but there are of course others.
