An overview of organizations helping US troops abroad

by Madison

Say THANKS to a soldier! www.Anysoldier.com is an easy to use website that provides addresses and information about soldiers. The site lists soldiers from America and other allies in the war on terror. You may sort the lists of soldiers by country where they serve and also the area they are from. In my opinion it is a duty of Americans to give thanks to the soldiers working to keep our country safe.

As we go about our everyday lives they are risking their lives.

Right now, as you read this, American soldiers are out in a tent in Afghanistan, with limited supplies and enduring blazing heat in the summer and freezing cold in the winter with only a canvas tent between them and the elements. Right now a soldier is praying that they survive the war and are able to come home to their families. The brave soldiers on a quest to defeat terrorists and prevent attacks on America deserve our kudos, our respect, and our help.

So send a package to a soldier. Or just send a letter saying thank you. You don't need to do anything fancy, just take a few minutes to make the effort to get something in the mail to a soldier. The postage does not cost much. You only have to ship the package to NY or the west coast. Pick APO to go to NY and from there the package is picked up and shipped by military mail. I start sending packages out on Pearl Harbor day in honor of a relative that enlisted in the military after that attack. I then have a fun month of December sending out tons of packages to arrive to the soldiers for the holidays. I send coffee, books, magazines, writing paper and envelopes, note cards, gum, snacks, toiletries, t-shirts, tea, newspapers, and whatever else I come across that I think they may like.

I have received many wonderful thank you letters from soldiers. I find it exciting to find mail from the Middle East in my mailbox. I think families with children could use receiving the letters as a real learning experience.

As the fall approaches and we start to think about the holidays, think about what it would be like to be away from everyone you know at Thanksgiving and Christmas or Hanukkah. A small package may help a soldier have a few moments where they forget their stress and they celebrate the joy of being an American who knows their country supports them in their work to protect America. Be a friend to a soldier; I think you will find it a very rewarding experience.
