Flonase is a highly effective nasal spray that is used for allergies and sometimes asthma related problems. It is a type of corticosteroid. Because it is a spray it works directly on the nasal passages to reduce swelling and inflammation. This alleviates the wait time that is found when taking medication in pill form. All it takes is 1-2 sprays in each nostril daily and you have quick relief from seasonal allergies, pet allergies and anything else that causes you to have sneezing, a runny nose, watery eyes and all the other fun effects of allergies. The most common side effects of Flonase are rather few and include throat irritation, headaches, nosebleeds, dryness of the nose and irritation inside the nose. There are other rare side effects from the drug. The drug has a few interactions with other medications. The severe interactions are between corticosteroids and live vaccines and selected immunosuppressives and Natalizumab. Interactions that are considered serious interactions are between Fluticasone and Ritonavir, Corticosteroids and Corticotropin (ACTH)/Amphotericin B, Glucocorticoids and Aldesleukin and Corticosteroids and Mifepristone. Interactions that are considered to be moderate interactions are between Corticosteroids and Quinolones, Steroids and Bupropion, and Corticosteroids and Anticoagulants. (webmd) These interactions can be avoided if both your doctor and pharmacist are aware that you are taking both medications. For this reason it is a good idea to have all your medications filled at the same pharmacy or with a chain store that shares its records with other stores.
Getting away from the clinical side and into the personal side of the drug, Flonase works great. I suffered for years with severe hay fever and allergies to cats. With the Flonase I was able to be around both animals and flowers with no sneezing, no runny nose, no watery eyes and no tiredness. It was really great to notice such a difference so fast. I had taken other medications in pill form for allergies before but nothing kicked in as fast as Flonase, being that it is a nasal spray. It definitely takes some getting used to if you are not accustomed to nasal sprays. It also at least in my opinion leaves a funny smell in your nose. My Doctor put me on Allegra at the same time as the Flonase, but I continued using the Flonase by itself after running out of the Allegra. The Flonase does work on its own almost as effectively as the two together does and because it is so fast acting you can take it when you have a problem rather than having to remain medicated just incase. I think that the ease and convenience of the Flonase is one of its best attributes. You can keep it with you encase you encounter a flower arrangement that is going to set you off or have to enter a place with pets.
In short Flonase is a very effective medication for providing allergy relief. It is quick acting and convenient. It has relatively few side effects and drug interactions.
