With the advent of internet sites that allow you to watch full episodes of a series, I was recently able to watch the entire first season of "Heroes" in a matter of several days. Wow! What a ride! Granted, I sometimes had to wait for nearly an hour for the episode to buffer completely so I could watch it uninterrupted, but the wait was well worth it-certainly better than having to wait for a week or longer between episodes with regular TV viewing. Some episodes came with German or Japanese subtitles and the only problem was that these subtitles sometimes covered up the English subtitles for Hiro's conversations. A small price to pay for being able to indulge in an exciting adventure that kept me on the edge of my seat wondering how the world was going to be saved.
Despite the otherworldliness of the characters, their abilities, and the situations they were in, this program was totally believable, mostly due to the great writing and acting. One could easily get confused by all the jumping around between story lines and time periods, but the continual scene labeling which named characters, places, and time periods helped to keep me on track. Ending each episode with the beginning of the next episode was a great way to keep me wanting to know what happened next.
My choice for the two best character portrayals are Hiro and Sylar. Hiro is an excellent combination of innocence, humor, and pure goodness. Sylar, is just the opposite-he is the embodiment of pure evil. Well done, by both actors.
The finale of the season was a satisfying conclusion to the "save the world" dilemma, one I didn't see coming, and it left me with enough questions to want more and to wonder what would happen next season. Are Nathan and Peter really dead? Is Sylar really dead? What will be the next big dilemma that somehow everyone will be involved in? The only real question that I had throughout the season, which I thought would be answered, had to do with Nathan and Peter's mother. She hinted that she, too, had some special power, yet she never revealed what it was. Maybe that will come out next season. I look forward to new episodes this fall. I don't know if I'll be able to stand having to wait so long between episodes if I chose to watch it on TV. I certainly don't want to have to wait till season 2 is over so I can watch them all back to back. Ah, a true dilemma!
