asked as she rubbed her cheeks lightly with her finger tips.
"You mean besides flawless skin and pretty features? No," he answered still staring relentlessly.
Nicole could feel her cheeks burning. She wished he'd just go away. He was discombobulating her senses something fierce. She cleared her throat and asked, "Has no one ever told you it is impolite to stare?"
"I thought I was just gazing," he told her unperturbed. Nicole wished just then for a dictionary so she could see for herself if there was a difference. She was pretty darn sure there wasn't. "May I offer you a drink?" he asked as he snapped his fingers at a passing waitress.
"No, I'm a designated driver tonight among other things," she said derisively as she thought of how her relatives all ganged up on her that evening insisting that she accompany her cousin to this place. As if Nancy needed any help getting guys. What she needed, thought Nicole viciously, was help getting rid of guys which was probably why they wanted Nicole to come with her. If there was one thing Nicole was good at it was scaring off men, boring them to death or making sure they never talked to her for very long what with her sardonic sense of humor.
"Something non-alcoholic, then. Coke, okay?" Mr. # Seven asked politely. It suddenly struck Nicole that this stranger was nicer to her in the five minutes they had been talking than Ralph had ever been. That traitorous thought made her feel like she was somehow cheating. Another one of what her relatives considered a bad habit of hers was her undying loyalty especially to those they deemed unworthy of it, namely Ralph. She shrugged her answer and was miffed when Mr. # Seven proceeded to stare - or was it gaze?- after he placed the order with the waitress.
She was feeling distinctly nervous and turned around to see what Nancy was up to. Maybe with any luck she would want to leave. No such luck, Nicole saw, as her cousin was laughing and having a grand old time with a mountain shaped like a man.
"Looking for someone?" Mr. # Seven asked smiling that incredible way of his.
"Yes, sort of. I'm playing the part of wing girl for my cousin but I'm pretty sure I could just leave now and she wouldn't notice until some time next week."
He laughed at her. Boy did he have a nice laugh, she thought. She became annoyed at herself for instantly comparing him to Ralph and his stupid guffaw, his only claim to fame. She cast another glance over her shoulder hoping to catch Nancy's attention so she could come
