The controversy about the HPV vaccine

very important progress. In all likeliness it will prevent a lot of women from getting cervical cancer in the future, but it should be a choice made by the parent not forced. The government shouldn't intervene and make it mandatory until more facts are documented to show full effectiveness over a longer period. In the meantime, by all means, let it be available - optionally. Cervical cancer is a terrible disease, and one which should not be ignored, but it's not airborne, so it is not going to become widespread if people behave responsibly about sex. There is no solid reason why this vaccination should be forced upon young girls unless the parent opts to allow it.

How do we know for sure the full effectiveness of Gardisal at this point? What if it doesn't provide adequate protection over time and "wears off" by the time a girl reaches the age she'll become sexually active?

As a choice, yes, most definitely this immunization should be offered, but it's disturbing so many states in the U.S. are jumping so quickly to make it law. Without getting into the political and corporate lobbying which accompanies this debate, another deep concern, my biggest concern is long term health for our female population. What if this vaccine, due to the largely unknown consequences of receiving it, ends up causing more harm than good in the long run?
