Cooking and catering is your hobby and you would like to develop it into a home business but are not sure how to proceed. There are a number of steps to consider before you begin, and decisions that need to be taken before the business even begins to operate.
The first item on the agenda is the initial decision. The question that you need to ask yourself is "what kind of home cookery business do I feel able to run and want to be involved with?" There are many types of home cookery businesses and the need is to decide which of these suits you home and personality the best. For example, you could choose to run a party-plan type of business where you invite people round to taste your food and from this gain orders for you cookery products. Alternatively, assuming you are in the right area, the opportunity may arise to act as a caterer for those special dinner parties or business meals where the host requires someone to prepare and serve the food for them. Alternatively, your business could become a wholesale operation, supplying local shops and other outlets with fresh produce. Finally, you might prefer to offer a mobile catering service, for example selling snacks and hot food to people on industrial estates or in office complexes. This then will be the first choice that you have to make.
Secondly, you will need to assess what equipment you need for your business and how to organise the space within your home to cater for your new business enterprise, remembering that health and safety is even more important in a home based environment than it would be in dedicated premises. In addition, you will want to ensure that the business does not interfere too much with your family life. Similarly, the equipment and kitchen area will need to be free of pets and other animals. In addition to the health and safety aspect, there are the neighbours and your local authority to consider. For example, would the noise and odours emanating from your business, pleasant though the latter might be, become a nuisance to close neighbours? Are there any regulations governing the use of a private house for this sort of business? All of these issues need to be resolved before the business starts to operate.
Assuming all of the issues and decisions indicated above have been dealt with, the next step is to plan the business, in the same way that you would plan for any home based business. This planning includes allocating the appropriate business hours, locating and arranging contracts with supplies, and developing the promotional programme for the business.
Running your own home cookery business will be a lot of fun if you get it right, but you have to remember that it is a business and part of that process is to ensure that it becomes successful. For this objective to be reached you need to approach the set up and running strategies for your cookery business in exactly the same way as you would for a business that has its own separate premises.
