How can you be sure to get great rates booking flights online? There are several websites that specialize in booking travel - Orbitz.com, Expedia.com, and Travelocity.com, to name a few. There are even websites that let you "name your own price," such as Priceline.com and Hotwire.com. Most airline companies also provide the ability to book flights directly online, and some even have discounts and specials listed on their sites. But how do you know if you're really getting the best rate?
With so many options out there, it certainly pays (or saves) to shop around. Check the major travel websites and airlines websites. You'll find the rates are often about the same unless you luck upon a special promotion. Many of the travel websites now offer services like Tripwatcher from Hotwire.com, which will monitor flight rates for you and let you know when rates drop. Also, by signing up for accounts with these websites, you can receive information via e-mail on discounts and specials in your area or flights you would like to plan.
The most effective way to save when planning a flight is by starting the hunt early. The further ahead you can book a flight, the more money you are likely to save. A month or two can make all the difference when it comes to airline rates. Airline companies sell their seats at lower prices when more seats are empty. As seats begin to fill up, the rates rise. If you are unable to begin searching ahead of time, many travel sites offer "last minute deals" that are worth looking into as well.
Another great way to save is by flying on weekdays. Flights that leave or arrive on Tuesdays and Thursdays are going to be cheaper than flights on Fridays or Sundays. This again is simply due to demand, as more people are traveling on weekends.
Overall, as with any major purchase, being flexible and shopping around online are sure ways to a cheaper flight and more spending money on your trip.
