The baby gift market is a booming one. Strollers, cribs, changing tables, playpens. car seats... they all play their part in ensuring a great start for mommy and baby alike. Then there's the filler needs such as blankets, clothing, personal baby care and, of course, toys.
All of these items are fantastic for baby, but lest we forget about mommy? In all of my years, I have yet to find a new mommy who doesn't look like, "hey - the world has forgotten that I exist!". Throughout pregnancy, mommy is put through numerous trauma points - the least of which is people she doesn't know asking, "are you pregnant" and "can I touch your belly?". In other words, she feels like a walking billboard - and most likely the size of one as well!
She's also undergoing multiple hormonal shifts, so she is frazzled and has lost all patience by the time baby's due date arrives. So any help you can give HER as baby comes home from the hospital, the less frazzled she will feel. I am here to tell you that it's okay to focus on mommy as well as baby when you are picking out those special gifts. And there are some great choices out there when thinking of "mommy first" for a change of pace.
For example, why not put a home spa treatment basket together? Get a foot bath (with massaging action) and place bubble bath, soaking salts, a cozy washcloth and fluffy towel in there in her favorite scents and colors? With all that getting up and down with baby the first few weeks, she'll be feeling loved when she can turn to a bubble bath or a foot soak that you provided for her.
Or why not get her a high quality nightie in her favorite color? She'll feel like you deeply care about her when she opens a gift of personal thought such as this. Go ahead and throw a diaper and pacifier in with it so she knows you care about both her and the baby at this spectacular time in her life.
Maybe along with your gifts for baby, you could include a gift certificate for mommy to her favorite spa, allowing for massage, aromatherapy, hair treatment or a mommy makeover. This'll show her that you'll be there with her throughout the coming weeks, and that, when she's ready, she can focus on mommy for a little while. Don't forget to include a coupon for her stating your free care for baby while mommy has her appointment! She'll feel a weight lift from her shoulders as she opens your generous gift. And what a friend in you as well!
You don't have to break the bank to give your loving gift to the mommy-to-be. Putting some thoughtful ideas together to show her how much she means to you will add the finishing touch the baby shower or newborn gifts she receives. When mommy feels love, she can give love more freely to the one that matters most right now - her baby.
