I have spent a considerable amount of time pondering this, and the best explanation I can offer at this time is that, in the life you build, Spirit is the architect and Soul is the builder.
Think of the law and how people think of it. In general, law is divided into two aspects: the letter of the law and the SPIRIT of the law, which is to say the intention or idea of the law. So it is with a person.
The spirit of a person is the person as a concept or idea, like an architect's drawing and, also like an architect's drawing, it is our vision of our lives, our ideal, everything we should be.
Soul has callused hands and muddy boots. Soul looks to the drawing for direction but, as the builder is not subordinate to the architect (The sensible architect), the soul is not subordinate to the spirit.
The soul and spirit work together as equal partners with a common goal of building the best life possible. Each has their place and each needs the other, especially as this is their first and only project.
Consider the architect at his table. The paper on his board and the pencil in his hand offer unlimited possibilities. There is no mark the paper will not accept and there is no point on the paper the pencil is unwilling to go. In the drawing room potential is everything and no idea is excluded.
Now consider the builder on the job site. In the course of his day's work the ideas and visions of the architect are made into real things of steel and concrete, wood and stone. This is often hard work and also fraught with complications. Some ideas prove to be impractical or even impossible to execute. Others might, upon further examination in the field, be seen to interfere with the vision as a whole.
This necessitates consultation between the two, to develop methods to accomplish the impractical or to rethink the design of a piece that doesn't quite seem to fit.
As Frank Lloyd Wright said: "The architect's two most important tools are the eraser in the drawing room and the wrecking bar in the field".
This consultation serves both builder and architect equally well. The architect learns about construction technique while the builder increases his appreciation of the artistic aspects of building. Spirit becomes more soulful and soul becomes more spiritual. This may also be seen, on both sides of this analogy, as gaining in wisdom, but that is another subject.
This is my first article on this subject, though most likely not my last. Please bear in mind that Philosophy is the love of wisdom, not necessarily the total possession of it, therefore my blueprint remains open for revision at any time.
I hope you enjoyed reading this, if nothing else, and that you will do me the kindness of sharing your thoughts on this idea with me.
