It is important to find a doctor you can trust when treating depression. If you don't have a doctor you can trust then you won't get the care that you need. You won't be as honest with them as you would with someone you felt more connected with. You should establish a good relationship with your doctor. You want someone who will listen to you. You want to feel like your doctor is looking out for your best interests.
Many people with depression don't see a regular doctor. Most will tell you it is because they didn't feel like they were getting the help that they needed. If a person with depression feels like a doctor only wants to shove a pill down their throat, they may refuse to go back. Conflicts with your doctor only bring more depression and feelings of hopelessness.
Change your physician a hundred times if you have to. You may have to try a few times before you find the one that can best help you. You don't buy the first pair of cute shoes you see. You look around and find the ones that best fit you. This should be the same with your physician. Your mental health is important, don't give up just because the first doctor doesn't fit your needs.
Ask for referrals. Talk to friends or family members about the doctors they use. Their doctor might also be able to help you. The best way to learn about things is word of mouth. If you are involved in a support group, ask the other members. A local mental health center might also be able to give you a list of doctors that might be right for you.
What are their specialties? Are you looking for a general doctor, or would you prefer to have someone who specializes in mood disorders? Ask for credentials. In most cases, they will have them displayed somewhere in their office. You could also ask a patient in the waiting room what they think of the doctor. You don't have to pry into why they are there. All you need to know is how well the doctor takes care of his patients.
Look in the phone book. Make a list of the doctors that seem interesting. Now make a list of what you want out of a doctor. Research the doctors and start narrowing down your choices. You can call the doctor's office and give them a brief description of your ailments and ask them if that doctor commonly treats those things. Next step is to set up an appointment and start getting treated.
If you have an HMO, you may need to contact them when you are ready to change doctors to get approval. You can also ask them for suggestions about whom to see. They will probably have a list of choices for you that you can pick from.
A doctor who doesn't seem uppity is usually a good choice. Look for someone who is down to Earth and has good bedside manner. Do you feel comfortable around them? If they intimidate you then you may subconsciously prevent yourself from the treatment you deserve. Be up front with your doctor and expect them to do the same with you.
