Disney is not exempt from public scrutiny. Parents should not assume that because it is a Disney movie it is safe for any child to watch. That being said, is Disney all evil? No, but that is not to say that Disney movies shouldn't be analyzed.
If you want your daughter to feel she can grow up to be independent rather than dependent on a man, would you continually tell her marriage is necessary? If a child watches a movie over and over again then the messages in that movie can become the ideals and values for the child. The Little Mermaid may seem like it encourages young girls to go out and explore. However, Ariel only goal was to get a man. In fact, she decides she can get her man without her voice because body language is all a man needs, in fact men don't really like women who talk to much. This may not effect a child who sees the movie once, but what about the child who sees it ten, twenty or thirty times?
Another Disney movie that aroused critics was Beauty and the Beast. Here a smart young girl who loves to read is the town outcast. Furthermore, when she meets a beast who is abusive she decides that she can change him by being kind and just loving him. Which of course she succeeds to do.
The bottom line here is that no company should be assumed innocent. Parents must think about what their children are seeing on a constant basis. The issues in these movies can be helped if parents discuss these ideas and their inaccuracies with their children.
