Reading as a hobby: Escape in a good book

by Aspire2Be

Created on: July 18, 2007

You can see it all as you turn the pages... the cold stone corridors, the radiant dragons with scales like gleaming gems, the ominous and dark forest your favorite character stands before, the flowing and flowery blue dress the fair maiden is adorned in, or even the stormy sky as lightning lances across the dull gray clouds like tendrils of blue and silvery-yellow. Let your imagination run free, lose yourself to the print on the pages of your favorite books, and put yourself in the story.

It is magnificent when you fall in love (in an admiring sense) with the characters of a good book. Its painful as you cringe when their personalities are flawed and the hero makes a mistake in love or does something completely irrational. You just love it when you get so attached to a character you start to cry when you find their fate is death or to be forever apart from the one they love. A bond forms to the characters you read about in books, you learn about them and their personalities. There are no actors and actresses playing the parts. Simply the characters you grow to love or hate.

As a reader you can become part of the story, you can let your imagination take over. It's as if you are standing there in the rain with those in which you read about. The mud sloshing under your bare feet, icy rain pounding against your back, shivering as you trudge forward. Or maybe it is a beautiful morning on a ship; the waves gently colliding with the giant ship, the sea breeze filling your nostrils while gulls fly above crying out for food.

Nothing can compete with a book. You decide how you see things and what that special character looks like. Curl up on the sofa in front of a warm fire, crack open your favorite book... or a new adventure, and indulge upon the most fantastic of tales; letting your mind see the worlds that created in a vivid way not even the big screen can capture. Come to love the characters, groan at their mistakes, and laugh at their personalities and antics; or applaud at the romantic kiss and weep at the seperation or death of character(s).

You see... when you read a book, you embark upon a journey no form of entertainment can take you on. Well, unless you go on such an excursion yourself.
