When it comes to literature, the reason the Mystery, Suspense, and Thrillers get lumped together is because they are all genres themselves, and tools that the other genres use. A mystery will use suspense as will a thriller, but do not be fooled. They are most definitely very different from each other.
A mystery is when the entire plot circles around the question, "Who did it?" You will most likely run across elements of suspense and many thrills along the way, but the main driving element is the answer to that question.
A thriller can often be confused with many other genres simply for the fact that any book worth reading has a climax. Often times the climax of any book, no matter the genre, is going to be thrilling. But the true thriller is that rare book that reads like a cover to cover climax. It is truly the literary worlds equivalent of the summer blockbuster action movie. And like the action movie, can be very enjoyable when done well, and very cheesy when not.
A suspense is a whole different beast than the first two. Suspense is that feeling of impending doom, that unknown evil that is lurking around every corner. Unlike the thriller, whose sole purpose is to take you for a ride, it makes you dread to turn the page, but at the same time won't let you stop.
These are three very popular and entertaining genres. While they all borrow from each other to get their story out, they are all quite unique.
