How to vary your pilates workout

One of the most common workout problems I've experienced is burnout. I often tend to find a workout I like and stick with it.

Ok, I'll admit, I've practically memorized some of my favorite workouts. There are even a few workouts that I'm sure I could do without needing to play the video.

Aside from the fact that repetition can lead to boredom, too much of the same workout eventually leads to physical stagnation. Muscles need variety and change in order to continue improving.

So, how can you maintain a fresh Pilates routine without becoming a victim to monotony?

1. Research: If you have a favorite DVD workout, check into the entire catalogue. Chances are, your favorites have at least a few more DVD's in their collection which you could alternate into your weekly workout schedule.

2. Mix it Up: If you're dedicated to at-home workouts, consider signing up for a class or a personal trainer. Although studio Pilates can be expensive, the experience could prove to be much more rewarding and enlightening.

3. Study: If studio workouts seem out of reach, go to the source. There are plenty of fantastic books and guides available for the Pilates student. Try the library or internet for recommendations about which books are best.

4. Accessorize: If you typically do a no-frills workout, maybe it's time to dress things up. There are a number of great accessories that can be used with a Pilates workout. Consider any of the following: exercise balls, rollers, bands, rings or circles.

5. Try Someone New: If you're faithful to Winsor-Pilates, maybe it's time to venture into new territories. There are many varieties of Pilates, each with its own unique emphasis. Consider learning new methods from a variety of qualified instructors. The following are instructors who've studied original Pilates and have added their own personal method to the workout: Ron Fletcher , Bob Liekens, and Moira Merrithew.

6. Make Friends: Whether you're socializing in the gym or working out at home, working out with a partner is always more fun than exercising alone. Liven things up by getting a friend hooked on Pilates too!

No matter where you started or where you are today, there's always something you can do to enhance your Pilates workout. So get going and make Pilates brand new all over again!
