Getting God's attention is easier than Him getting ours. When a loving thought crosses your mind, don't let it pass without giving it back to him. Look up to the sky, or to whatever you see when you feel His omnipotent presence, and exclaim, "I love You".You can elaborate, if this is your style, but it is unnecessary. You could make it even more exciting than that and blow Him a kiss and promise to keep in touch always.
All He wants is our undivided love. He wants to be loved and respected and he wants to be the first consideration in our lives. He knows our style, after all he created us and if we are wordy and gushes all over the place and it takes three paragraphs to say these simple words, He has time, He will listen; if on the other hand you are prefer directness, then just say it. He will not feel shortchanged.
You can talk to him in any way that you like. You can talk bad to him but don't be surprised if he ignores you. That's because nothing begets nothing. But love will never fail. Let Him know He is your everything and he will respond. And most often the response will be more than what you expected.
Look for him everywhere and you will find him. It may take days, hours, months, but your searching will not go unnoticed. It's just that there is so much darkness and despair in the world today, and so many people in need, that much of our lives is filled with dealing with and cutting through this, that it is easy to think he is not open to you. He Knows. Just love him and tell him. He already knows that, but He still likes to hear it. Don't we all?
The above has been written because I am back from reading comments by many various voices and beliefs on a community site and I left more confused than ever. I wanted to say, stop arguing and stop trying to prove the existence of God. He exists for us that believe and since he is love, where else can we find him but in our own hearts. Stop preaching to others and instead let your love for them shine through. (He will show you how if you ask Him with love.)
This isn't easy, but it is the best way I know how of getting the attention of God. You still don't understand? Repeat slowly "Our father in heaven..." and listen to what you are saying to Him? One of my favorite ways of getting His attention is to shut off the television, turn off the lights and lie back on a comfortable couch and close my eyes and imagine I am sitting near Him and talking. I may ask silly questions or I may ask important questions. In these times I seldom make requests since I really don't need anything that He hasn't already given me, I just want to feel Him near. Sometimes I just sit and look at Him. No, I am staring at His picture, although I have several, I am staring at the picture of Him on my eyelids. Sometimes it takes a little while for his face to appear, and sometimes it never does, but once in a while it does.
In my younger, busier years I would never think to do this. I really have no idea whether this photogenic ability of mine to sometimes see Him on my eyelids has anything to with the state of my health since my eyesight is diminishing, but I really don't care. If He wants to close my eyesight, I am perfectly willing for him to do so. I am confident I will still be able to see Him and that is all that matters.
