I do not know about Antarctica but under the ice-beds of Canada there have been found reserves of diamonds. This immediately alleviates the "Conflict Diamond" arguments about the inhumane conditions that gemstone miners have endured for centuries, diamonds, in particular. I personally would purchase any diamonds from Canada over the South African methods. As consumers, we have this as a choice and should use it.

I am a cool onlooker at the Global Warming phenomena and go by the way of those who believe our earth is changing on its natural course. Due to new methods of reporting and researching change, we are hyper-sensitive about every detail. My point is that of course we should examine utilizing resources for the betterment of mankind.

I think the USA is behind in its thinking regarding exploration and risk-taking. I am not one bit afraid of nuclear energy plants and I think we should be drilling for oil like crazy. If having a war is the alternative to drilling for our own oil, let's drill.
It would be cheaper than fighting a war overseas, and we wouldn't be losing our soldiers.

Perhaps the ice will melt on both poles and we'll find treasure troves of resources to use to use judiciously and with care. We are all facing new alternatives and we must be brave and ethical in our approach, I cannot imagine why this would exclude mining in Antarctica.
